Year 2 2026
1st Half Autumn Term
Welcome to Earhart and Armstrong Classes!
This half term, we will be thinking about what it means to belong to our class and school community. We will be focusing on our school value of kindness, celebrating the many ways we can show kindness to one another and helping every child feel valued and included.
In English, we will be securing our understanding of how to construct and write clear, coherent sentences. We will focus on using capital letters and full stops accurately, as well as practising the use of capital letters for proper nouns, such as days of the week and people’s names. We will also enjoy reading Oliver’s Vegetables and use the story as inspiration for descriptive writing about the vegetables Oliver discovers in his grandpa’s garden.
In Mathematics, we will continue working with numbers up to 100. The children will develop their place value knowledge by partitioning numbers into tens and ones, using this understanding to support their addition and subtraction skills.
In Geography, we will learn about different climate zones around the world and explore the question: Would you prefer to live in a hot or a cold place?
In Science, we will be investigating habitats and learning about food chains, helping us to understand how living things depend on one another.
In Art, we will explore colour mixing and enjoy creating our own imaginative artwork.
In PE, we will take part in multi-skills activities and continue to develop our gymnastics skills, building confidence, coordination and teamwork.
We have a busy and exciting half term ahead, filled with lots of learning, creativity and fun. We are looking forward to sharing it with the children and celebrating all that they achieve during their time in Year 2!
2nd Half Autumn Term
This half term, we will be focusing on our school value of courage, exploring what it means to be brave and how showing courage can help us in our learning and everyday lives. We will recognise and celebrate acts of bravery, resilience and perseverance, encouraging children to have a go, challenge themselves and learn from their mistakes.
In English, we will continue to develop our sentence-writing skills and learn how to extend our ideas by using a range of conjunctions, such as but, so and because. This will help us to write more detailed and interesting sentences.
In Mathematics, we will continue to secure our understanding of addition and subtraction, building confidence and fluency with these important skills. We will also begin learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, identifying and describing their features.
In Science, we will continue our learning about living things by exploring the school environment and investigating microhabitats. This will help us to understand how different animals and plants live and thrive in specific environments.
In History, we will learn about the significant event of The Great Fire of London, discovering key events and the important people involved. We will explore how this event changed London and why it remains an important part of British history.
We have an exciting and rewarding half term ahead of us, and we are looking forward to all the new knowledge, skills and experiences we will gain along the way!
