1st Half Summer Term:

Our theme this half term will be centred around the book ‘Cinderella of the Nile’ by Beverely Naidoo. We will be discussing the differences and similarities of the traditional tale and writing diary extracts using adverbial phrases. We will also be revisiting inverted commas to punctuate speech, and retelling sections of the story using all the features we’ve learnt.

Our Mathematics lessons will focus on multiplicative and divisive reasoning linking prior knowledge to 2-digit calculations. We will also be focusing on expanded method for multiplication and the partition method for division. We will also be learning how to convert between pounds and pence and learning how to add and subtract two or more fractions with the same denominator.

In Science we will acquire new knowledge about light. We will be recognising why light is important in the absence of darkness and learning how shadows are formed. We will also be finding patterns in the way that the size of shadows change.

Our DT lessons this half term have lots of cross-curricular links to Maths, History and R.E. We will be designing and making packaging for an archaeologist to safely pack an Egyptian artefact for transport. We will be exploring a range of existing packaging, looking at purposes, shapes, sizes and materials.

In PE, we will be playing indoor inclusive games to work on collaboration and perform fundamental skills with accuracy and control. In outdoor PE, we will be learning the simple rules of rounders. We will begin to bowl a ball accurately and learn about underarm and overarm throws.

2nd Half Summer Term:

Our Writing lessons this half term will be centred around the book ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ by Roald Dahl.

Our Mathematics lessons will focus on learning multiplication and division facts using visual representations. We will be developing our understanding of the length of day and awareness of times of day. We will also be reading clocks to the nearest minute, digital clocks included.

In Science we will building on our knowledge about plants. We will be identifying and describing functions of different parts of flowering plants and exploring the requirements of plans for life and growth. We will investigate the way in which water is transported within plants and exploring the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.

In Art, we will be exploring sculptures. We will research Henri Rousseau and Hamish McKenzie and use their art to inspire ideas for our own sculpture. We will be doing observational drawings, rubbings and taking photographs of shapes and colours to inspire our art.

In PE, we will be learning about athletics. We will be learning how stamina and power help us to perform well in different sports and learning good techniques that will support us such as sprinting, striding and pacing. In our outdoor PE lessons will continue to be learning and playing rounders, using simple tactics and strategies in small-game situations.
